HOW TO TREAT LOW SPERM COUNT

Looking for medicine for low sperm count in Ghana? This article discusses what low sperm count is, its causes, home remedies, supplements & medicine for low sperm count.

What is low sperm count, also called oligozoospermia?

Normal sperm densities range from 15 million to greater than 200 million sperm per milliliter of semen. You are considered to have a low sperm count if you have fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter or less than 39 million sperm total per ejaculate.

Your chance of getting your partner pregnant decreases with decreasing sperm counts. Some men have no sperm in their semen at all. This is known as azoospermia (ay-zoh-uh-SPUR-me-uh).

There are many factors involved in reproduction, and the number of sperm in your semen is only one. Some men with low sperm counts successfully father children. Likewise, some men with normal sperm counts are unable to father children. Even if you have enough sperm, other factors are important to achieve a pregnancy, including normal sperm movement (motility).

Causes of a low sperm count

In many cases, it's not obvious what causes a low sperm count.

Sometimes problems with sperm count and quality are associated with:

  • a hormone imbalance, such as hypogonadism (reduced hormone production)
  • a genetic problem such as Klinefelter syndrome
  • having had undescended testicles as a baby
  • a structural problem – for example, the tubes that carry sperm being damaged and blocked by illness or injury, or being absent from birth
  • a genital infection such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea or prostatitis (infection of the prostate gland)
  • varicoceles (enlarged veins in the testicles)
  • previous surgery to the testicles or hernia repairs
  • the testicles becoming overheated
  • excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and using drugs such as marijuana or cocaine
  • certain medications, including testosterone replacement therapy, long-term anabolic steroid use, cancer medications (chemotherapy), some antibiotics and some antidepressants
  • being overweight or obese

  • Having sex when fertilization is possible. A woman is likely to become pregnant during ovulation — which occurs in the middle of the menstrual cycle, between periods. This will ensure that sperm, which can live several days, are present when conception is possible.
  • Avoiding lubricants. Some products such as Astroglide or K-Y jelly, lotions, and saliva might impair sperm movement and function. Ask your doctor about sperm-safe lubricants.

Talk with your doctor before taking dietary supplements to review the risks and benefits of this therapy, as some supplements taken in high doses (megadoses) or for extended periods of time might be harmful.

We’ve been married for 3 years and no child. Doctor asked us to do some labs and the problem was from my husband. His sperm count in 2022 was 5.3million and the prescribed addyzoa and he also said varicocelectomy must be done. My husband took the addyzoa for sometime and stopped cos he said the medicine wasn’t working in last year July. We now wanted to do the surgery but when we did the semen analysis, the sperm count is 15.3millon. what do you think? Should we still go in for the surgery?
