What is the Salamol CFC Free Inhaler?

The Salamol CFC Free Inhaler is what is known as a ‘reliever’ inhaler. It can help to relieve symptoms of asthma and other asthma-like conditions, such as chest tightness, wheezing and coughing in adults and children aged 4 and over. It can also be used to prevent asthma symptoms that are triggered by exercise or exposure to allergens. It contains the active ingredient salbutamol, which helps to open up the airways. The Salamol CFC Free Inhaler is only available on prescription, so speak to one of our doctors or fill in one of our quick consultation questionnaires to discover if it is suitable to treat your symptoms.

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a long-term condition that can cause coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness. It is common, but it can be controlled effectively in most people, although symptoms can vary in severity from person to person. Symptoms of asthma can occasionally become gradually or suddenly worse, which is known as an ‘asthma attack’. Signs of a severe asthma attack can include:

  • Your reliever inhaler not helping symptoms as much as usual or at all

  • Severe or constant wheezing, coughing and chest tightness

  • Being too breathless to eat, speak or sleep

  • Breathing faster

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Feeling drowsy or dizzy

  • Lips and fingers turning blue

It is important to call for assistance and seek immediate help in the case of a severe asthma attack.

Asthma is caused by inflammation of small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. These tubes are called bronchi and if you have asthma, the bronchi will be inflamed and more sensitive than normal. There is no clear reason why some people develop asthma, although it is known that you are more likely to develop the condition if you have a family history of asthma.

How can the Salamol Inhaler help to relieve symptoms of asthma?

Salamol contains the active ingredient Salbutamol Slate which belongs to a group of medicines called beta-agonists. Salbutamol is a bronchodilator and works by widening the airways in your lungs to allow air in and out. This helps to relieve breathlessness, wheezing and chest tightness. It is used to treat symptoms of asthma in adults and children over 4 years of age and can also be used to prevent asthma caused by exercise or asthma caused by a reaction to allergens or to treat breathing difficulties associated with reversible airways obstruction, such as COPD. This type of medicine is known as a ‘reliever’. You may be using another type of medicine to prevent you from having an asthma attack (also known as ‘controller medication’) and it is safe to use your controller medication with the Salamol Inhaler.

  • Tell your doctor if your asthma gets worse or if this medicine does not provide as much relief from your asthma as before

  1. Fold-down the cap to open the inhaler and reveal the mouthpiece.

  2. Test spray the inhaler by firing 2 shots into the air before using it for the first time of if you have not used it for a period of five days or more. To test spray your inhaler, unscrew the top of it, so you can see the metal can inside - open the cap, shake the inhaler and spray the aerosol by pressing the can with your finger or thumb. 5. Take the inhaler out of your mouth and hold your breath for 10 seconds or for as long as you comfortably can - breathe out slowly

  6. After you have used your inhaler, hold it upright and close the cap immediately

If your inhaler does not work properly, unscrew the top and press the can down. It is important to clean your inhaler regularly to prevent deposits from the aerosol building up and blocking the inhaler. 3. Rinse the bottom of the inhaler with warm running water for at least 30 seconds

  4. Shake off any excess water and dry the bottom of the inhaler thoroughly (leave to dry overnight if possible) but do NOT use direct heat
