ACNE TREATMENT

Acne and blackheads are a common but harmless skin condition that can feel awkward. Acne is most common during puberty, when hormonal changes cause more sebum to form in the pores. For most people, acne disappears after adolescence, but it is becoming more common for acne to continue into middle age.

What does it depend on?

Acne, or pimples, is most often seen on the face and on the chest and back where we have the largest sebaceous glands. Pimples are not due to poor hygiene, usually hormonal changes or heredity are contributing factors.

People with acne have increased sebum formation in combination with impaired renewal of skin cells. This causes the sebum pores to become clogged by dead skin cells and filled with sebum - a blackhead is formed. Blackheads can be black and open or white and closed. The black in the blackhead is not dirt, but sebum that has reacted with oxygen and formed a black pigment. Acne bacteria live in the sebum, the breakdown products of which can inflame the skin and give rise to warts. The blackhead mask then becomes a red, raised and sore pimple that can be filled with yellowish-white var.

Most often, pimples heal on their own without leaving scars. It is common for redness to occur after a pimple, so-called hyperpigmentation. This disappears but it can take a long time.

Another form of acne is cystic acne which is more painful and goes deeper into the skin. Pimples can feel like large lumps and often leave scars. If you think you have cystic acne, you need to consult a doctor to get the right treatment. There are effective drugs that reduce scarring.

How is acne treated?

There are things you can do yourself to prevent acne:

• Do not peel or pinch the pimples, it may aggravate the problem.

• Sun can improve acne but also prolong the time it takes for scars to fade. Therefore, use sunscreen specially adapted for acne skin .

• Cleanse, treat and moisturize the skin morning and evening.

It is easy to be tempted to use strong and dehydrating products in the hope of getting rid of pimples quickly. Do not do it! Instead, use gentle products that do not irritate the skin. It reduces the risk of inflammation and dehydration and provides the best conditions to get rid of your acne. Choose products without perfume, alcohol (may possibly suit a very oily skin type or on the body), menthol and strongly fragrant plant extracts. If a product irritates or stings the skin, it is a warning sign.

Wash your face morning and evening with lukewarm water and mild cleansing . Be careful with scrubbing products that may contain sharp grains that irritate the skin.

Treat with salicylic acid . Salicylic acid has a unique ability to penetrate the pores and remove dead skin cells that clog. The acid also has a soothing and moisturizing effect on the skin.

Feel free to moisturize with a product that suits your skin type. If the skin tightens after washing and treatment, moisturizing is a good idea. If you have oily skin, you may want to use a moisturizer that has a matting effect on glossy areas. There is also moisturizing with a covering effect and special cover pins.

Moisturizing comes in various forms. Fat-free gel  is suitable for oily skin with acne, but if you are dry, a slightly oilier lotion or cream may be better.

Try to find out which products work best for you. Be patient - it usually takes one to two months before you see an effect.

Medicines for acne

If you do not notice an improvement with these tips, you can try a non-prescription drug . It contains benzoyl peroxide, a bactericidal substance that also prevents dead skin cells from clogging the pores. Always start with the weaker strength (5%) and follow the instructions in the package leaflet carefully. The higher power can be used in case of insufficient power. The medicine is available in the form of a gel, which is suitable for the face, and a washing gel that is used on the body when showering.

If drugs with benzoyl peroxide do not give good enough results after two months, you can turn to healthcare. There are several effective prescription acne medications to choose from. You should also seek medical attention if you get pimples for the first time in adulthood. Then it may be a skin disease other than acne.
